The award-winning pop-up shop was commissioned by Shinola for the 2016 Clerkenwell Design Week. ‘The Bolt’ was designed by Giles Miller Studio; a louvred façade conceived using parametric design and digitally fabricated using CNC technology.
A vast number of Shinola’s signature lightning bolt logos were cut to form a body of pixels. Arrayed on the organic timber rib structure and used to highlight the progressive transparency formed by orientation of the bolts. This detail was enhanced at night by the glow from the central event space.
The architectural installation was efficiently brought to life using CNC routers. 8000 digitally printed components cut from birch ply were built up into modular units and finished with a light covering of black lacquer, allowing the natural grain to remain visible. The modules were developed for both ease of assembly and transportation, this also allowed scope for future use.
