Freja, closely linked to Cat Potters ‘Pernilla’ collection, investigates the use of 3D mapping and digital CNC production to create bold made-to-measure footwear. The unique interpretation of architectural and sculptural form blurs the line between footwear and artefact. The collection transitions from an initial bold block through to a recognisable faceted high-heel, a body of work more akin to a series of artists studies.
Having previously experimented with solid timbers on the ‘Pernilla’ collection, ‘Freja’ was a new investigation into Solid Surface material. Whilst using the same 3D modelling technology to develop the various adaptations, the CNC manufacturing process needed to consider a new assembly method.
The internal sections were machined from foam board as per the original design, which had then been lined in leather. A ‘V’ grooved net was machined to produce the Corian faceted skin, assembled around the foam board core. Once bonded together and finished the facets of black seamless solid surface have the appearance of solidity, but the added benefit of being much lighter than perceived.
