Alexander Mulligan approached us after being given a brief to create an audio system suitable for the modern home by Wallpaper for their Handmade exhibition. The concept we were tasked with certainly met that, it did however provide many technical challenges, bringing together multiple materials, moving parts and the integration of Ruark audio’s latest components requiring specific volumes to extract the true depth of sound.
Comprised of individual, curved units that stack upon each other, the sculptural audio totem, made of water jet cut British slate, punched and pressed polished brass and thermoformed Corian® delivers sounds in 360 degrees. The striking stacked formation also pays homage to the sound systems of Brazil’s carnivals, hence the name, ‘EDSM’, for Equipe de Som Modernista.
MCD engineered the structural solutions and electrical integration, before crafting the crisply detailed Corian volumes and ensuring that the other outsourced materials came together as seamlessly as the Corian was joined. The quality of construction was critical in order to ensure the high-quality audio output was not compromised by the modern and innovative design.
