DOMINO LIGHTThe domino run in motionPLAY VIDEO
Switched on by a rally of copper dominoes, The Domino Light, was a stunning part of the Fumi Gallery sponsored “Reconsidering Canon” installation at the Design Museum. Starting with a “rocker’ domino in the lamps base, the dominoes can be arranged in any configuration as long as the rally finishes on the receiver domino on the opposite side of the lamp to connect the circuit. The light plays with the moment a light is switched on, making it less instantaneous and creating a more tangible relationship between electricity and materials.
The proposed lamp was sensitively developed to safely encase and hide the electrical components while staying true to the original design. Crafted using digital CNC machining and carfeul hand finishing the HI-MACS lamp made a stunning and elegant central focus of the interactive exhibit. The dominoes, cut from extruded copper bar, were hand polished to extract their raw material finish and then allowed to tarnish naturally embracing the materials change due to visitors’ interactions.
